Special Education Services

The Saco School Department offers a continuum of special education services, supportive services, and placements to meet the needs of students with disabilities in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations. This continuum of services in the school district includes placements in regular education classes, resource classes, and self-contained classes.

Our mission is to provide every student with the support they need to reach their full potential. Here you’ll find resources, staff contact information, IEP process guidance, and updates on our inclusive practices. Programs & Services

We are committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in the setting that best meets their needs. Our services are designed to help schools, educators, and families create inclusive learning environments where students with disabilities can participate meaningfully alongside their peers.

Our supports include:

  • Specially Designed Instruction:  Special Education instruction in reading, writing, math, executive functions, and/or emotional regulation.  These services are highly customized to individual student needs in instructional content and amount of time.

  • Related Services: Services may include speech, occupational, and physical therapy, counseling, social work, and BCBA consultation.

  • COAST Program (Section 28): Our Functional Lifeskills Program helps students build the everyday skills they need to be as independent and confident as possible at school, at home, and in the community. We focus on functional  academics, social skills, and daily living skills, while making sure students are included in school activities and learning alongside their peers whenever possible. Through hands-on experiences and a supportive team, we prepare students for success in real life.

  • PATH’s Program (Section 65):  Our Behavioral Health Day Treatment program provides students with the extra support they need to be successful both academically, behaviorally, and emotionally right within their school day. We combine a strong academic program with intensive therapeutic services to help students develop coping skills, build positive relationships, and manage emotions in a safe and supportive environment.

Destruction of Records

The School Department destroys the education records of its special education students at the end of the school year in which the student would turn 26 years old. Parents or adult students wishing to obtain these records should contact the School Department at that time. The School Department shall maintain permanently a record of a student's name, address, phone number, grades, attendance record, classes attended, grade level completed, and year completed. To obtain special education records, please contact the Special Services Department at 207-284-4505.
