In a dynamic collaboration aimed at enriching both elementary education and teacher preparation, CK Burns School in Saco has partnered with the University of New England (UNE) to support the growth of pre-service teachers while enhancing math instruction for students. The partnership was made possible through a research grant awarded by the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Maine (ATOMIM), which funded a yearlong initiative to build pre-service teachers’ content knowledge and instructional skills.
Through the program, 13 UNE students were paired with experienced host teachers at CK Burns School as part of their Math Methods course in preparation to be K-8 certified teachers. Together, they participated in joint professional development during the fall and transitioned into classroom placements this spring, applying what they had learned in real time with students. As part of their coursework, the UNE students conducted research on effective teaching practices and presented their findings at a recent academic symposium.
“This collaboration was an invaluable experience,” said AnnMarie Hann, Math Interventionist at CK Burns School and project lead. “It deepened math pedagogy for future educators while also sparking momentum for continued partnership with UNE. I want to thank my UNE partners, Lane Clarke and Krysten Gorrivan, who helped write the grant, and we’re thrilled that many of these students will be back next year as student teachers.”
CK Burns School Principal April Noble praised the initiative as a win-win for students and educators alike. “Our school community benefited greatly from this partnership,” Noble said. “The UNE students brought fresh perspectives and energy, while our experienced teachers modeled best practices. It was inspiring to see this level of professional collaboration in action.”
This initiative represents a forward-thinking model of educational partnership, one that benefits current students, supports future educators, and reinforces Saco’s commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. The Saco School Department extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated host teachers at CK Burns School who opened their classrooms and generously shared their expertise with the UNE students. Their mentorship was key to the success of the program.
