MLTI

During the week of March 3-7, Saco Middle School (SMS) students participated in the second annual Maine Winter Classic, a Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) of the Maine Department of Education. Students engage in innovative, technology-driven learning experiences that help prepare them for the future.

The MLTI program, now in its 23rd year, provides Maine’s K-12 public schools with professional development and 21st-century learning tools to support student success. Through MLTI, students gain access to cutting-edge technology, including devices, software, internet connectivity, and specialized training designed to enhance learning outcomes.

“Our students are embracing technology in ways that encourage creativity, problem-solving, and real-world application,” said Saco Middle School Principal Marie Soucy. “Programs like MLTI provide them with the tools and confidence they need to succeed in an ever-changing digital landscape.”

This year, SMS students participated in various interactive game-based learning experiences as they “traveled” around Maine on a virtual game board, completing a variety of tasks, earning tokens, and learning about topics like computer science, digital citizenship, digital design, and gamification. Some of the options included identifying artificial intelligence, creating designs on Canva, learning a language on Duolingo, learning binary code, Google Earth tours, making 3-D print files, and so much more.

“Learning with technology is so much easier than just trying to learn on paper,” said Ella Lamoreau, an SMS student. “I loved the AI-generated photos and that I got to try out new languages on Duolingo today during the MLTI Winter Classic. I’m learning German right now!”

The Maine Learning Technology Initiative continues to transform learning across the state, making Maine a leader in technology-driven education. Through initiatives like MLTI, students at Saco Middle School are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a digital world.
